Utah Llama Trekking: What You Need to Know

When it comes to choosing Southern Utah hotels for your Capitol Reef National Park adventure, you have a number of options. But before you book your standard chain hotel, it’s important to consider the amenities that you might be missing out on. Most hotels offer a small, standard room, with little in the way of amenities besides maybe a pool. But this isn’t the case at the best Torrey Utah resort.

At Cougar Ridge, there’s no shortage of on-site activities and amenities to enjoy. Visit our resident ranch animals, enjoy a game of sand volleyball, go bowling or play on the simulator in the Grand Lodge, or book your very own private rodeo. But while you’ll definitely want to plan some time to enjoy our property, we can also help you book a number of unique excursions and activities in the nearby area.

Want to sharpen your photography skills and enjoy a guided tour of some of Capitol Reef’s most picturesque locations? Or maybe you want to cast a line in the Fremont River in search of a Brook or Tiger Trout. Whatever your interests, there are plenty of off-site activities to choose from.

Perhaps the most unique is a Utah llama trekking adventure. Keep reading to learn more about this unique activity, and why you should consider adding a tour to your next Southern Utah hotels stay.

Utah Llama Trekking Adventures

There are plenty of ways to get around Southern Utah. Driving and hiking are among the most popular, but off-roading, canyoneering, and even boating are all options, too. But one of the most unique options is a llama trek.

Offered by Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas, guests can enjoy a hike in Capitol Reef alongside a friendly llama. You won’t be riding this furry friend during your trek, though. Instead, they’ll be carrying your gear! Llamas can carry between 20 and 22 percent of their body weight, or roughly 70 to 80 pounds each. While you might not need much gear for a short hike, it’s still a fun experience to hike alongside a llama.

Worried that your new hiking friend will spit on you? Don’t be! While it is true that llamas spit, they only do so when they feel threatened or sense danger, so you’re unlikely to get spit on by one the trained pack llamas used for these treks!

What Kinds of Tours are Offered?

There are a number of Utah llama trekking tours to choose from in Capitol Reef. Day hikes, including two-hour, four-hour, and full-day hikes, are some of the most popular. A two or four-hour hike is a great way to get a feel for this unique form of travel. It’s also a good option for families who may not be up to a longer hike, especially if hot or cold weather. During your tour, you’ll learn how to pack a llama properly, then will take off with them carrying all of your gear! Photo opportunities during this unique adventure abound!

Overnight and multi-day treks with llamas are also available. For those looking for an even more unique experience, Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas also offers customizable trips. You could book a romantic sunset hike with a meal, a late-night trek to see the stars, or even a trip that combines fishing and Utah llama trekking.
