Canyoneering in Capitol Reef National Park

Southern Utah’s steep, rising cliffs and deep canyons make it a hotspot for this unique and exhilarating sport. Canyoneering combines rappelling with hiking, and sometimes even swimming. Unlike your standard rappelling route, which is usually set up in a designated location, following a canyoneering trail means hiking some distance from one drop to the next, or even working your way through a series of rappels, one after the next down a steep cliff face or mountain. stair-step style.

There are plenty of places to enjoy canyoneering across Utah and many other Southwestern states. But a couple of the best are Zion and Capitol Reef National Parks. With fewer crowds, Capitol Reef is ideal for canyoneering. You won’t have to worry about backups on the trail, and you’ll enjoy some stunning views and challenging trails.

The park’s diverse rock layers make for an exciting canyon environment. You’ll have several trails to choose from, ranging in length and difficulty.

Off-Roading in Sand Hollow State Park

One Southern Utah gem that many tourists never get to see if Sand Hollow State Park. This beautiful park might be a fraction of the size of nearby Zion or Capitol Reef, but it’s also somewhere you can go to enjoy a heart-pounding sport that isn’t allowed in national parks; ATVing.

Just about every state and national park you visit in the region has some hiking trails that are sure to get your heart pounding. But few offer quite the thrill of the iconic climb to Angels Landing in Zion National Park.

This 5-mile out and back trail climbs over 1,600 feet. The trail features more than 21 switchbacks that are certain to leave you sweating. Hikers must navigate along a narrow edge with steep drop-offs and only a chain handrail to hold onto. The top of the hike is more than 1,500 feet above the canyon below, so you’ll want to stay far away from the edge.

But if you want to enjoy some of the best views in the state, this hike is a must-see.

Mountain Biking on Gooseberry Mesa
